Southern Modern

This home began with a familiar idea: the traditional Southern brick house. From there, we started editing.

Architectural details were simplified, lines became cleaner, and expansive windows and doors brought a more modern rhythm to the exterior while filling the interiors with natural light. The goal wasn’t to abandon the home’s Southern roots, but to reinterpret them with a quieter, more contemporary point of view.

Inside, simplicity and contrast became essential to both the look and the way the home lives. One of the homeowners is visually impaired, so brightness, definition, and ease of movement were considered from the earliest stages of design. A restrained palette of light and dark, clean-lined finishes, stone, and modern materials creates visual distinction without unnecessary clutter.

Restraint also provided the perfect backdrop for the owners’ remarkable collection of modern art. Rather than asking the interiors to compete for attention, we kept them deliberately quiet, allowing the art, architecture, and carefully selected furnishings to do the work.

The home was designed with entertaining in mind as well. Open spaces create an easy flow from one area to another, with thoughtful connections to the pool, gardens, and surrounding structures.

The result feels both familiar and fresh—a Southern home stripped of unnecessary ornament and reconsidered for modern life. Here, simplicity isn’t about having less. It’s about giving the right things room to be seen.
